Logarithmic delay for N × N packet switches under the crossbar constraint

چکیده
We consider the fundamental delay bounds for scheduling packets in anN×N packet switch operating under the crossbar constraint. Algorithms that make scheduling decisions without considering queue backlog are shown to incur an average delay of at least O(N). We then prove that O(log(N)) delay is achievable with a simple frame based algorithm that uses queue backlog information. This is the best known delay bound for packet switches, and is the first analytical proof that sublinear delay is achievable in a packet switch with random inputs. The algorithm can be implemented with O(N log(N)) total operations per timeslot. Similar results for switches with speedup are provided, and complexity and delay tradeoffs are considered.

متن کاملTradeoffs in Delay Guarantees and Computation Complexity for Packet Switches
We consider the tradeoffs between packet delay guarantees and per-timeslot computation complexity in an packet switch operating under the crossbar constraint. It is well known that scheduling packets every timeslot according to a Maximum Weight Matching (MWM) achieves 100% throughput. This algorithm ensures average packet delay is within O(n) timeslots (where n is the number of input ports of t...
متن کاملVariable Length Packet Switches: Delay Analysis of Crossbar Switches under Poisson and Self Similar Traffic
We consider crossbar switches for switching variable length packets. Analysis of such switches is important in the context of IP switches where the packet interarrival times and packet lengths are drawn from continuous distributions. Assuming a single stage M N switch we obtain a very general throughput delay model for Poisson packet arrivals and exponential service times. We then analyze an M ...
متن کاملStarvation Free Scheduler for Buffered Crossbar Switches (RESEARCH NOTE)
Need for high speed internet connectivity has lead to a substantial research in switching systems. Buffered crossbar switches have received a lot of attention from both research and industrial communities due of its flexibility and scalability. Designing a scheduling algorithm for buffered crossbar switches without starvation is a major challenge as of now. In this paper, we proposed a Delay ba...
متن کاملScheduling in Switches with Small Internal Buffers: Extended Version
Unbuffered crossbars or switching fabrics contain no internal buffers, and function using only input (VOQ) and possibly output queues. Schedulers for such switches are complex, and introduce increased delay at medium loads, because they have to admit at most one cell per input and per output, during each time slot. Buffered crossbars, on the other hand, contain sufficient internal buffering (N ...
